During the first few months of America's combat flights over Europe, more then eight in ten bombers were shot down. To boost morale, the War Department said any crew could go home after 25 missions. On May 17, 1943, the B-17 Memphis Belle was the first to meet the challenge...without losing a single crew member. Often riddled with bullets and flak, she had her engines shot out five times and once nearly lost her tail.
Named after pilot Colonel Robert Morgan's sweetheart, "Memphis Belle" has starred in Hollywood films and was declared a national treasure. Today, this enduring symbol of freedom is still on display at the Mud Island Air Field in Memphis -- and the brave pilot who flew her still lives in Asheville, North Carolina.
Now, only 1945 collectors in all the world will be able to own this definitive die-cast model issued in honour of Memphis Belle and Colonel Robert Morgan. Hand-assembled from over 100 parts, with features that include retractable landing gear, turrets that swivel 360°, working bomb bay doors, and rotating wheels and propellers. Hand-painted in authentic camouflage, the model is emblazoned with military markings and, of course, the most famous Belle of Memphis is stenciled on the side of the plane. There is even a message to the Führer on one of the bombs!! A fabulous addition to any military aircraft collection.
